Formsprag and Stieber bi-directional backstops are used on gun turret drive systems for military tanks and artillery systems. These clutches, also known as “No-Backs", provide the holding brake and allow for manual positioning of the elevation and azimuth drives. These clutches are used to smoothly and quickly position turrets or gun barrels in the presence of overhauling forces of gravity, providing precise movements that only a Formsprag or Stieber bi-directional backstop can provide. Additional uses include winch drives in combination with ballscrews to smoothly raise and lower large critical loads.

Formsprag and Stieber clutches and backstops are the preferred one-way clutch when a purely mechanical solution is required, or as an integral part of a larger hydraulic or electric system. From a basic engineered sprag and cage assembly or ramp-and-roller module to a complete custom overrunning clutch system, Formsprag and Stieber Clutch can provide the necessary level of complexity required for the application solution.
